Mini Nubians are loveable and affectionate goats that demand a rub and a cuddle, as much (or more) than they do food.  They have adorable floppy ears, and each goat has its own unique markings.  Some are nearly one solid color, while others are spotted and have four colors.  They make you smile when they run to greet you, with their ears flapping in the wind.

We chose this breed for many reasons.  Though their ears are  adorable, and certainly one of the reasons we were drawn to this breed, our first concern was the make-up of the milk.  Mini Nubians are a cross between a Nigerian Dwarf goat and a Nubian goat.  Nigerian Dwarf goats have the highest milk fat of all goat breeds.  Milk fat is important in making soaps, lotions, and cheese.  The more fat, the better these products will be.  A Nigerian Dwarf goat is exactly what its name implies - it is a very short goat.  And as such, it also has very short teats, which makes for more difficult milking.  A Nubian goat is a large producer of milk, they produce much greater quantities of milk compared a Nigerian Dwarf.  Nubian goats, being a larger goat, eats more and can be more difficult to manage than a smaller breed of goat.  The Mini Nubian goat is a nice small to medium sized goat.  It is easier to milk than a Nigerian and easier to manage than a Nubian.  And though it doesn't have the milk fat of a Nigerian Dwarf, it does have a greater milk fat volume than a Nubian.  Our goats each produce up to one gallon of milk each day, but on average produce 2-3 quarts a day depending on the goat with once a day milking.

The goats at the dairy are much more to us than milk makers, but their milk is why they came and is an important component of how we came to choose each goat that lives on this dairy

Mini Nubian #FunFacts

_MG_2768.jpg

Mini-Nubians are a cross between Nigerian Dwarf goats and Nubian goats.  The first off spring of this breeding is called a first generation Mini-Nubian.  When a first generation is bred to another first generation, the offspring is a second generation.  When two second generations are bred, their offspring is a third generation.  And so on and so forth.  If different generations of mini-Nubians are bred, the offspring is named for the lower genera.  For example, if a second generation is bred to a sixth generation, their off spring is a third generation.  A mini-Nubian is considered bred if is meets breed standards and is a 6th generation or higher.

Mini Nubians are known for being a little on the noisy side - wanting their humans’ attention and at times, down right demanding it. They are affectionate goats with the endless personality and warmth.
